Kevin Newburn’s Ock Vs Spidey (Colored)

Another of our own Kevin Newburn’s drawings, colored by my good self.. Another different effect here, I used Eyecandy’s Chrome filter in conjunction with the colorize function to do all the coloring on the characters. This gave an interesting effect. I softened down the reflections a little and hey presto. Hope you like it Kev πŸ™‚

COSTUME: A Portrait of an Angel

I wanted to take part in this theme day, AND fill a request.. Brian Gaskill in the red Angel uniform (dunno if I got the right one though.. as he had a couple).

So here we see Angel admiring a painting of himself in his original X-Men uniform. The red uniform is a recolor of the previous blue uniformed Archangel I previously submitted. The wings have been desaturated and brightened. The background pic was painted using my wacom tablet over another image of Brian. Everything is new other than the eyes and mouth area. Tried to give a cloudy sky impression in the background. Added a perspective shadow on the wall from the front Angel.

X3: Emma Frost, Professor of Telepathy

Just another concept for the next X-Men movie. Courtney Thorne-Smith as Emma. Let’s face it, with this teacher you would definitely come to attention..

This was just a quickie really as we were discussing castings over on marvel-boards.co.uk and I wanted to do a realistic costume for Emma, but still keep her flirtatious, almost vampy style.. Found a suitable chest to use as a base and positioned it over the original t-shirt. Recolored it to more closely match the base. Used the smudge tool to extend the skin area. Cut out a distorted X shape. Used vector point to point to create highlights and shadows for seams around the X.

Found a chicken wire texture on the net, used this to create a fishnet style front piece for the t-shirt. Used the mesh warp tool to distort it to follow the curves of the chest and the pull of the t-shirt. created a drop shadow, and additional shadowing at the shoulders and chest for the t-shirt. Brightened up the eyes, and added the x to the belt. A simple gradient fill and border to give it a nice look.

Ultimate C2F: LocalHero – Lion Heart

Another theme day submission.Β In the Ultimate Universe, LocalHero is the protector and Champion of Scotland, heir to the mantle of William Wallace.

Back story: Was struck by lightning during a freak storm while visiting the Wallace Monument in Stirling.

Abilities: LocalHero has the ability to generate highly charged plasma using metallic objects as a conduit. Skilled Marksman and Swordsman. Exceptional Athlete and Martial Artist. Using metal threads laced through his uniform to channel plasma and create a frictionless field can achieve flight capability at up to 200MPH for approx 2 hours

Weapons: Chromium Steel/Vibranium Sword, Chromium Steel/Vibranium Guns (Contain no shells. Used as focus to create and channel plasma projectiles.

Ok.. notes: Base Model: Chris Genkinger (Body Builder) Recolored the body and added my face (well one side of my face flipped and resized. Background: Window view from Duntulm Castle. Flags cut from seperate image, plag pole extended and placed on the cliff side. The floor is from a stone/brick texture i have, deformed and shaded to add some realism. Costume: Done using my usual method. Glasses: cut from Cyclops X2 image.

Used a mask to alter the lens transparency Colorized blue to match costume. The tartan headband was a late addition, I wanted to include something of my heritage, so that is my mum’s Clan Tartan – Mackay. The logo is the one I have used for years, it was inspired by the Lion Rampant on the gold flag. I gave it a raised feel using Eyecandy Bevel Boss filter, then deformed and manually reshaded it to match chest. The zipper is from the same base pic i used for the Vamp:Spidey Iceman manip.

Sword/Guns: from previously downloaded stock of objects. Recolored and deformed to fit. Glow on sword done using Eyecandy’s corona filter. I was tempted to do a belt, but then I decided the gun holsters were an integral part of the costume.. Used the sword image again in the logo to reemphasis the scots feel by replicating the St Andrews cross design from the flag. All original backgrounds removed using mask layers

Ultimate C2F: Ms. Jellybrain Telepath X-Treme

Ms. Jellybrain, Omega level Telepath and Telekinetic. Upon reaching puberty, Jellybrain lost her hair revealing a translucent scalp. The other side effect of her mutation was increased mental powers, which she initially used to place ‘artistic’ images into peoples minds. As her powers have increased, a further effect of her mutation has become apparant.. her brain glows lime green.. giving her head a jelly like appearance.. hence the chosen x-name.

Art: I think I managed to keep MsJellybrain’s lovely face pretty much untouched. Hope you don’t mind this little bit of fun πŸ™‚ The pic is from the Yahoo album. So is the head.. you might recognise Robbo’s crowning glory. Blended the two images together and cut out the combined head on a new layer. Found the brain on the net and masked it into the head. The body is Jolene Blalock (T’Pol from Enterprise) which was recolored. The head was resized to match. Using masks I faded out a larger head in the background. The power effect was created using one of the tutorials in the Hints’n’tips thread. The background is a random pic from the net.

Ultimate C2F: WelshCat – Brenin Cymru

or ‘King of Wales’. I see the Ultimate Welshcat as being like T’Challa aka Black Panther, a champion and ambassador for his people and country. I liked the Universe X take on Black Panther and thought it would work here.

The base model is Antonio Sabata whom i beheaded. I have used this base for previous submission(s). The head is a panther cut from the original and grafted on to the body. It was simpler to cut the whiskers and redo them from scratch. The body has two fur texture layers one purple, and one mottled on overlay. The head was colored and additional mottled fur texture added to match. I promoted the eyes mouth and nose over the color layers to retain the correct colors for them. The chest logo is cut from a welsh flag, and distorted onto the chest. The sword and scabard were done originally for my Valkyrie manip but I decided to re-use them here to get a sort of Captain Britain/Arthurian vibe going too. The belt created from scratch and the lion head was from a medallion. The background is of Port Merrion (setting of The Prisoner tv show) Meeowww;)

Fantastic 4th: Sentinel of Liberty

Well I almost forgot all about the 4th July myself, but I managed to pull this out of the bag. A digitally colored and altered Joey Mason pic.

Step 1: Darkened the inking by use of multiply layers. Removed the excess white space around the outside. The shield originally had 4 circles(i dunno why) so i corrected this by erasing the two innermost circles, and replacing them with a larger central disc and a thinner circle.

Step 2: Using the lassoo tool so block of areas I filled them with blocks of colors. The disk colors were created initially with vector shapes and adjusted to fit. This layer was then merged into the main color layer.

Step 3: Used the lassoo tool again to select areas of the main color block. these were darken using the HSL dialog.

Step 4. In order to give a bit more depth to the colors and to the scales, added gaussian noise to the color layer. Cut out the scales from the main inking layer (this was on top set to multiply) and Negative’d the colors. Offset this selection slightly from the black ink and applied a small gaussian blur and set the layer mode to dodge. duplicated this layer again, applied a higher level of noise, colored blue, and set to hue at 25 % opacity.

Step 5: Selected a suitably patriotic background (in this case a sunset shot of Statue of Liberty). (A) Flipped the pic left to right. Applied an edge preserving smooth of about 15. (B)Duplicated the layer and colorized it blue. (C)grouped these layers together and added a gradient filled mask to the blue layer to give an effect of sun rising. (D)selected the layer group an using the inking outline as a guide, created a mask to allow the colored Cap to show through.

Step 6: The flag was created on a seperate canvas from an image I create for a previous Cap pic. Added a black border to make it fit into the inking style more. Applied a wave distortion with horizontal amplitude of 1 and wavelength of 100, vertical amp of 4 and wavelength of 40. created 2 gaussian blurred black filled rectangles on a new layer, set to darken at about 30% opacity. The same done with white rectangles on a lighten layer. Used the distorted flag to create a mask to hide the lighten and darken overspills. all merged into one layer. used free deform tool to distort the flag further into a more realistic form. The pole is a gradient filled rectangle and the ropes were done freehand. transferred to the main canvas and positioned. Used the main ink layer to again mask off the flag behind Cap.

Step 7: Logo added in Bremen Bold on two layers, one with a preset chrome fill, and another with a custom Red White Blue fill. messed about with the layer blend modes to get a nice effect (chrome layer is on multiply at about 75% opacity). These were then merged and a pincushion lens distortion applied. Added a drop shadow. Finally brought up the signatures to a new layer and reversed the color.

I made this animated version to illustrate the coloring process:

Anyways Happy 4th of July Weekend to All.

F4 Concept: Ben J Grimm AKA ‘the Thing’

Just an experiment in PSP8 using masks (which I hadn’t used that much in the past). Ben is weight training while Johnny annoys him as usual. The base model is body builder Greg Kavaks, who already had pretty big arms, but I cut these out, enlarged them (and the bar bells) and blended them back into the base pic. The background is made of a few different textures including galvanized zinc and black ceramic tiles. The flame was done using a custom gradient fill smudged into a flamelike trail. an additional softened gradient fill used to give an orange glow to the rest of the background. Thing’s head was based on a mask I saw. USed this to get the basic shapes which were made using the pen and various flesh tones from the base pic. The rock texture is one of my stock and was put on a multiply layer. Edited various mask layers to reveal the sections of the base pic and arms/barbells I wanted to show. The logo was made from one cut from a comic cover, with additional texturing and the rest of the text is done in Fantastifont. The ‘4’ logo is from the teaser pic I submitted previously.

Spider-Man 2 Animated (Almost)

This started life as a Tracie Mauk inking of Spidey and Ock, digitally colored in my own inimitable style… colors, textures, gradients, chrome filters and this time a bit of masking on the background together with brush filter. The web in the corner is a texture on a couple of layers set to screen and the logo is cut from a Spidey promo pic. I know I should have metalized all the webs on spidey.. but..i’m afraid laziness got the better of me…

X3: Logan – Mutant Vs Metal REDUX

Based on the comments in the UIRs on my previous ‘BoneClaw’ Wolverine, I went back to the drawing board and began again. This is my first manip using PSP8.

I started with a much better quality pic of Wolvie running towards the camera in front of what looked like a bluescreen. The tunnel background was downloaded from google and placed over the top of the wolverine image, I then cut out wolverine’s shape from the background. I used the original metal claws to line up rectangles of my bone texture and then used the lassoo tool to cut out the shape (i made them longer than the originals). I also used the lassoo tool in conjunction with HSL to darken the flat sides of the claws. The blood was drawn on a multiply layer and then smudged out. The body on the background was added from another google find. logo from scratch. Let me know if this is an improvement. Using the same selection I cut out the background with I created a filled shape which was blurred, and distorted to make the shadow on the floor. I also made a gradient filled selection to tint wolverine to match the background more.

Hulk Smash!: Target Aquired

The guy Hulk is bearing down on better get his shot of quick, cos the speed the hulk is moving he only has about 5 seconds to shoot (or go “OH SH*T!). :p

This started out as a pic of bodybuilder Orville Burke, I liked the pose and figured it might make a good Hulk. I cut him out of his original background and colored him green. His proportions weren’t quite right for the hulk so I cut and enlarged his hands/forearms and his calfs using smoothing and cloning to get back the missing detail.

The head is taken from a teaser photo of the hulk that was released yonks ago. I upped the brightness by duplicating the pic onto a couple of new layers set to screen. The head was then cut out and positioned over orville’s. I had to tweak the colors a bit to get a match.Β Over the top of this lot I put a leathery skin texture for some additional depth.

The pants were created in my usual manner of multiple layered textures and shaders. The background was a random Nevada desert shot from the net. The helicopter is one of the ones I used previously in my Ultimate Hulk/Cap pic a few months ago. The target sights created using vector shapes and set to screen. Added some text to show range/speed etc and on the other side of the target is a list of random numbers. The hulk logo was pieced together from the logo in the hulk movie site.

I also made a wallpaper version:

Parker’s Portfolio Preview #4

A closer look at one of the manipped Photos used in the final scene (used in my big spidey image and the portfolio collection image).

I tried to put the backgrounds at an angle to give the pics a dynamic feel. the pics were created using photos the model of the movie spiderman from various angles combined with excerpts from a panoramic view of manhattan at various angles.

The panorama was actually a daytime shot which i made negative, then colorized a pale green, and set to multiply over the original pic – and made a night view. The combined model and background pics were tinged grey/green and a border added to make it look like a photo. For these Individual pics I added the camera viewfinder graphics on an overlay layer

X3: Cry Havok and let slip the dogs of war!

A concept for a movie Havok using the Mullet’s casting. Just a quickie really, using the base pic of Wolvie from X2 & the head of Shane West. Remove the x on wolvies chest using the smudge tool then added some random noise. The havok logo is done using vector circles on overlay layers offset to give a raised effect. The power effect was drawn then is smudged and softened and duplicated onto a couple of other layers and blurred to give the glow. The black halo was built up using some shaded vecotr spheres on softlight blurred. All in all took about 30-40 mins including the time to find a decent head shot of shane.

Rise of the Machines: Ultron Recharged

Just a quickie I threw together for this theme day, as Ultron has always been a pretty cool robot and villain.

Started with the photo of the Ultron bust downloaded from the net, added a couple of different background textures, deformed to give a nice perspective. Added some gradient fills to simulate shadows. Added Ultrons shadow to the floor by creating a filled selection and deforming it, then blurring it. The laser beams and reflections in Ultron were created using blurred vector lines.

Still looked a bit flat so I added another layer with the wall texture set to soft lift, and cut out ultrons shape to simulate the reflection. Finally added some glows to his eyes and mouth. The border and text was done with Eyecandy chrome filter. The font is Beast Machines (a transformer font).

Parker’s Portfolio Preview #1

The pictures which make up this (and the following) preview pic(s) were created for to be used in panels in the Spiderman manip posted at the end of May.

Three of the pics were created using photos the model of the movie spiderman from various angles combined with excerpts from a panoramic view of manhattan at various angles. The panorama was actually a daytime shot which i made negative, then colorized a pale green, and set to multiply over the original pic – and made a night view. The combined model and background pics were tinged grey/green and a border added to make it look like a photo. The pic at the bottom middle is cut from the larger scene and shows my manipped from scratch movie Spidey (See the final scene art notes on how) The Daily Bugle press pass was from the net, I just tidied up the cornest. The Police pass was also downloaded from the net. I added the photo from the press pass, changed the date and added the name and paper details. The background is my previously posted Daily Bugle manip

Point of View: Spiderman

In response to a ‘challenge’ from Darth_Zaiyen over on the C2F forum, I had a go at doing a quick manip. Seeings as i seem to be have cobwebs on the brain atm..this shows Spidey’s view of New York from high up on the side of a building. Used a photo of New York taken from high, the Spider-Man movie ‘EYE’ Teaser poster and an extreme closeup of Toby Maguire’s eye used as a reflection on the inside of the eyepiece.

Spider-Man 2: Escape from Doc Ock

I watched Spiderman DVD again and had the germ of an idea for a scene I wanted to manip. The idea was for a scene from the next Spiderman movie incorporating the DVD menu/border frame.

The base pic was an old black and white pic of body builder Bill Davey posing in a spotlight. He wasn’t as bulked up as he seems to be now. The pose seemed good for spidey preparing to swing off. As opposed to my usual style, first thing I did was create a background for the pic by using a layer filled with a brick texture. I then deformed part of this to make a ledge for him to ‘stand’ on. It was originally going to be a ledge on a building but I remembered my old Spiderman game with spidey escaping through the sewers being chased by Doc Ock and that set me on the way.

Used Xenofex Little Fluffy Cloud filter with a lot of noise added to add the green slimey texture to the wall and ledge. The spotlight on the original pic gave me the idea that it could be the light from the sewer entrance case on the wall. I used vector circles to recreate the spotlight (which was incomplete at the bottom and side where it went off the original pic) and deformed part of that to match the angle on the ledge. This was softened and the blend mode set to soft light.

The original shadow was also cut off at the edges so I used the vector tool to draw around it and extend the arm. Ock’s shadow was created from scratch using vector drawing. This was blurred and the layer set to soft light to give a sense that the shadow was cast from further away. Now for Spidey himself. Cut out the model from the base pic and promoted to a new layer. Used the smudge and soften tools to remove the edges of his shorts, facial details and generally smooth out the body so it looked costume like.

I created a new layer filled with a chainmail texture. This was colorized blue. Using the body to create a selection, the extra was cut away, leaving just spiderman’s shape. I used the lassoo tool on this to select the areas of the body to be colorized red. I nearly forgot that the red strip down his extended arm would be twisted around, due to the angle of the wrist. I moved the body layer above the colour layer and set it’s blend mode to overlay. This gave me the highlights and shadows of the body providing definition to the costume.

Time to take a deep breath and start the webs… using the vector point to point line I layed out the verticals upto the collar. I worked out the pattern on the face using a quick pencil sketch. Extended the verticals up from the collar to meet over the nose. The horizontals and face circles done in the same way. This was fiddly but didn’t take as long as you might expect. This was done using a silvery metal texture as the pen color. Used the webbing as a selection and create a drop shadow slightly offset. This gave the 3d look (i hope) This shadow layer was set to multiply at 50% opacity.

The spider was created much larger in vectors, used to create a selection. This selection was used with Eye Candy chrome filter to get a 3d look to it. I shrunk this down rotated it to match the pose before placing it. Eye created in the same way. The web flying out the pic was created using three straight vector lines (with own drop shadows) with a squiggly line drawn over the top also with a drop shadow. Added a shadow web coming from the shadow arm.

At this point I was about to add some logos and stuff, but still thought it looked a bit bland. So copied the layers to a new canvas, and merged them. I then used Flaming Pear’s Flood Filter to create some murky water. This was cut out and placed back into the original picture. I think this added a whole new dimension to the pic. Time to add the little extras. The rat was found on google, cut from it’s original pic, reshaded and recolored. Added drop and wall shadows for it and placed it against the wall. The cobwebs were created from a texture downloaded from the net. The texture was rotated to various angles and used to fill layers set to screen which made the black areas see through.

The layers were built up to give some depth. These cobwebs were to form both part of the scene and the DVD menu frame holding the scene selection panels and the corner logo. The logo itself was cut from a promo pic of a Spider-Man 2 poster. The three picture panels (supposed to be for scene selection) were created using photos of the model of the movie Spiderman from various angles combined with excerpts from a panoramic view of Manhattan at various angles. The panorama was actually a daytime shot which i made negative, then colorized a pale green, and set to multiply over the original pic – and made a night view. The combined model and background pics were tinged grey/green and a border added to make it look like a nightvision photo. Sections were cut using a rounded rectangle (from the vector used on the borders).
