Sketch: Dobbie the House Elf

Well I have been re-listening to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows audiobook (as read by the excellent Stephen Fry) and I was just doodling away and this is one of the sketches that came out. I didn’t deliberately start intend to draw Dobby, but here he is:

I may recreate this digitally at some point and clean it up/color it etc, but I just thought it would be kinda fun to post it.

WSC 010711 Shaun of the Dead

Another weekend another sketch challengeover at Outcast – the challenge was to sketch up your favourite animation or transform a non animated show or movie into a cartoon. http://outcaststudios.com/forums/index.php/topic/10808-outcast-staffers-weekend-challenge/

I love Shaun of the Dead with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and thought it would make a great ongoing animated series so here is my “poster” for it. based on movie promotional material.

Dark Phoenix (Art: Kevin Newburn) Colored

Another of Kev’s drawings, colored in PSPX2. Many layers and effects in this one. I especially liked what is happing with the background – the universe in flames almost. very fitting for this character. The only thing I think I could have done better is more shadows on the sash blowing in front of her – it looks kind of flat now.

Gotham by Knight (Based on Bruce Timm)

Based on a Bruce Timm sketch. Thought I would try something different and give it the feel of vector art. Inked using Inkscape then Coloured in PSPX2 as ever. The background comprises many layers of grey shapes interspersed with ‘mist’ layers created using smudge and gaussian blurred gradients set to screen. Moon is done in similar fashion.

Hellboy Art: SurfingEntity Color/Ink: LocalHero

This sketch came up on the random images in the front page over at Heromorph and I thought I would have a go at inking/coloring it. Done with vectors/textures & gradients. Background made up of several layers of random dots. The original sketch was very dark so I decided to keep it that way – which is kinda fitting given the character.

Silent Scream

I was sitting at my pc the other night looking through some old inhumans scans and I fancied doing an homage to Kirby Era Black Bolt. Did the main design elements of his suit in vectors, duplicated and gaussian blurred. then added many concentric hoops to simulate his scream. I didn’t want to ape kirby exactly, so the background is my interpretation of the kirby dots. Enjoy.

Deadpool – Would you like fried with that?

Well I haven’t submitted anything in a while and I was reading some Cable/Deadpool recently and thought I would revisit one of my earlier submissions. A reworking of my coloring attempt from 2003 of Kevin Newburn’s Deadpool image. Kev’s work can be found at http://www.devildinosaur.com/

The basic work is the same as before but I have made the color a better match for the comic costure, and paid more attention to the highlighting. Also I have added a little humor in keeping with the character. If you are interested Wade’s name badge says “How may I kill you today?” Below is a side by side comparison of sketch and finished art.

The earlier version can be found via the tags below.

A Rainy Night in Gotham

Just an experiment mixing some images I found on Google with a formerly unfinished work in progress I had. Colored/inked using vector shapes. The rain effect was done by creating a new layer. This was then filled with white. I used PSP’s Add noise filter to add gaussian noise (25%) coverage. Then used the motion blue to create angled streaks. duplicating this layer multiple times (setting each layer’s blend mode to multiple) I then merged them and used the negative function to reverse the layer setting it to screen. this layer was then moved below batman but above the background. repeated the process with slightly different settings to create a layer of rain in front of batman. simple when you know how;) I couldn’t remember who did the drawing originally. As soon as I can or if anyone recognises it, I will add credit here.

Kevin Newburn’s Spy Girl (Colored)

Well I have had the pleasure of coloring Kev’s work before and so I thought I would give this a go when he posted it. Hope you don’t mind I took the liberty of flipping it so that I could put the logos on the left. Done using lots and lots of multiply, screen and overlay layers and much smudging with the old pen and tablet (especially on the hair) You may recognise the background I used before on one of my Blink pics. The window itself was created totally from scratch based on Kev’s layout. Original Pencils

Above Metropolis

I found a sketch of superman in my images folder, i’m not sure who it was by, possibly Khary Randolph. Anyway I decided to color it in PSP using vectors. Picked out the best lines from the sketch and used bezier curves to ‘ink’ the drawing. I didn’t like the angle of the left hand (looking at the picture) hand or foot and so drew my own. Then picked my fill colors and line colors. The shadows are done with vectors also and set to multiply at 25%.

The pink sky background I found on google. I added the city skyline at the bottom using filled shapes to create the buildings and set it to soft-light. The superman logo at the back is my own vector one.

I like how it turned out, a sort of retro animation feel.
