Today’s sketch challenge was to feature the FDNY, first responders to the towers on 11th September 2001. I tried to do something that would in some way capture the hellishness of the scene that met them.
For the brave and the lost..

Was watching District 9 on Sky again this evening. Cracking film. As I was watching it I felt like sketching a bit of art so here is just a quick painting sketch of Christopher Johnson the hero “prawn” from the excellent movie District 9
Done using Sai – time taken about 1 hour
Well I started this some time ago in PSP X2 but recently redid the inks completely in Sai. Following the pencils of my old friend Kevin Newburn [link] whose work you can find at both that link and also at [link]
I always enjoy working on Kev’s stuff, his style just appeals to me.
x-statix is of course copyright Marvel/Disney
And then I figured I had time to do the flat colors on it too so here we go
Well I had a bit of time today so I went back to do some more work on my Oracle #dsc submission from earlier in the week. I think I have finalised the lines on Batgirl – but may still tweak Oracle in the foreground. If anyone is interested the poses were inspired by some of Casey Jones work – so you could say this is a homage.
Well this week’s sketch challenges have all been red heads and today is no different. Dynamite’s Red Sonja ( She-Devil with a Sword ) [link]
Most of this week I haven’t had the time to do much more than layout so I took a bit longer this evening (1Hr) and tidied up my sketch and added a wee bit of color. After loading the image I realised she must be holding her sword with her butt cheeks – reloaded with appropriate strapping to hold the sword in place – lol
Also after looking again at the image, I see a bit of a resemblance to Lauren Ambrose (Clare from Six Feet Under / Jilly Kitzenger in Torchwood: Miracle Day)
Didn’t have much time this evening so just the sketch for the DSC challenge [link]
Scarlett from GI-Joe. Seen here in contemplation prior to kicking someones bottom in the training dojo
Well I spotted this sketch [link] while browsing Tumi’s ( [link] ) gallery. I loved the perspective and was kindly given permission to ink it as a practice piece. From Tumi’s art notes:
“I call him the Daikun(It’s not really Japanese or anything, even though it looks it. Just a made-up,nonsensical word) He battles monsters known as the Sheyde. Expect more from him in the near future”
The inking is a bit of a mish mash (hope you don’t mind Tumi) and I tried a few different techniques for the shading, I think it works for the most part. I wasn’t able to make out the lower hand on the rightmost “golem” so I sketched in something based on the other hands.
Done in Paint Tool Sai.
I am like a lot of fans looking forward to seeing Babs back in action as Batgirl, but I will miss the fact that one of the most positive portrayals of a disabled characters in comics will no longer be there. I think that Babs as oracle was actually more socially significant than Babs as Batgirl (a female derivative of a male character). The character became important in it’s own right rather than being dependant on Batman.
Edit: Also one of the greatest Batman/Joker stories ever told – Killing Joke – I was worried it “now” never happened. Ignore this worry, I have been reliably informed that this is still canon – so good work by Gail Simone on Batgirl #1 I – looking forward to picking it up at store.
Anyway this is for today’s challenge over at #dailysketchchallenge [link]
A farewell to Oracle. I didn’t get as much done on finalising the drawing as I had hoped in the time but I think I was a bit ambitious – trying to show Barbara contemplating her past as Batgirl (and now her future). I did some basic coloring to give an idea of where i was going – and may still finish this
Oracle/Batgirl/Barbara Gordon copyright DC Comics.
Well I got home from work and started doing the #dailysketch challenge while my dinner was cooking, got distracted by tv, came back to the sketch and didnt like it so started again.
This image took just around 45 minutes – a bit beyond the 30 min time limit but I wanted to add a bit of color to it. I based it on an old life study I did so I had the pose already, just needed to redraw it.
Challenge: Poison Ivy
Tools: Sai
Copyright: DC Comics
Just playing about with mypaint [link] – so far looks like a lovely bit of software – and free! Seems like a great tool to use alongside or instead of Paint Tool Sai.
I think what this image is saying is that even in the greyest and least exciting life there will be some spark, some little thing that will bring brightness to each day. Or something like that
Another image trying out mypaint. Heh, I really don’t know what this is. Is it an angry cloud? Is it some disgruntled furry whale of the sky? Is it a discourse on the state of society?
That’s right it’s a disgruntled furry sky whale.. or something. I need sleep!
For today’s #DSC [link] I got a bit carried away but still never got to the point of “inking” heh.. Oh well here is just over 45 minutes work (of a 30min deadline DOH) of Madelyne Prior or the Goblyn Queen as she was sometimes known. Had a lot of fun sketching goblins and creatures
Used a photo of Yamila Diaz for reference for the pose.
I may come back to this and finish it, hence WIP 😉
Well Steven Lisefski [link] was so gracious about me inking and coloring his Black Panther (Pencils: [link] / Inks: [link] / Colors: [link] ) that I thought I would surprise him with another inking.
This was another of his #dailysketchchallenge submissions and was intended as a quick drawing. Steven did express some reservations about the face, so I did my best to address this in the inking. I may have made his cave dwellers a bit too cute (although Lara still has no problem shooting them)
Pencils: [link]
Something a little different. Just a moody greyscale image of Eminem. Used an image from the Sun newspaper archives as inspiration: [link]
Think it turned out better than the photo! 😉 Done in Paint Tools Sai, roughly 1 hours work
This weekend’s sketch challenge [link] was a 2 hour rendition of the X-Men (your preferred perfect class in the original uniforms. Well the Original or First Class was my preferred choice so here we are:
Characters: X-Men, Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey
Copyright: Marvel
Tools: Paint Tool Sai
Time: 2 hours
Fun: Lots!
And here are a couple of WIP steps for those interested in that sort of thing:
Ok, had some food and now a couple of hours later this thing is really coming together. I think both horse and rider and ready to start “inking” over but I am going to leave it to later to do that.
Meantime here is a rough color test of the image so far. I did this just to get an idea of where I am going. This is by no means finished 😉 Now I am going to leave it alone before I break it. Will post some more images once I do a bit more work.
Another step in the image, just blocking in some more detail and working on placement of rider – decided not to have him so upright. Horse looks a little more horsey, bridle in place, bit of a saddle thing going on.
Well I was messing about this morning (Sat 3/9/2011) trying to draw a half believable horse for another image I had in mind and came up with this basic scene of someone riding their horsie at night – liking it so I will keep at it and see where it goes.
Well for today’s (01/09/2011) #dailysketchchallenge I thought it would be fun to recreate my Parkvengers (south park avengers mashup) Black Panther.
Character of course owned by Marvel.
Time Taken 35mins using Paint Tool Sai
