Say Cheese (Thing & Franklin) [Art: Mike Deodato] Colored

Another piece I started a while back and never got round to finishing. I loved this grey scale drawing created by Mike Deodato of Ben and Franklin the moment I saw it. It really captures the family feeling that Fantastic Four comic exudes when well written. Anyway this was basically coloring over a grey scale image to get the basic blocking, and then creating additional multiple/overlay and screen and gradient fill layers to give the color the same depth that the greyscale image had. Once I was happy with the coloring I flattened the layers and then applied a brush strokes filter to give it a more messy look. Most of this was done way back in 2004 however I never posted it then. I had another look at it today and tidied up some of my masks and edging and tweaked some of the coloring as I wanted Ben to be more orange than the original stone color I had. Anyway hope you folks out there enjoy it. And thanks again to Mike for making a great image in the first place

Jack Staff [Original Artwork: Ian Churchill] Variant Colored Cover to WWOJS #21

Well I found the inked drawing by Ian Churchill on a random Google search and thought it would be great to color. I then noticed that it was the cover to Weird World of Jack Staff #21 so I used the colored cover image as a guide/inspiration but gave it my own spin. So where the original cover has the hero on a roof with a cloudy daylight sky (complete with overlayed images of other cast members), I decided to make my version a night time piece. I think it turned out ok.

Rise of the Sentinels (Artwork: Kevin Newburn) Colored

Well this is an oldie. I originally started coloring this way way WAY back in 2003 but was never happy with the results. I tried again towards the end of 2004 and again was less than satisfied with the progress. I decided to give it another go because I felt it could be a very dramatic image if colored properly. The original drawing was titled Iron Sentinel, however I felt that having a corroded sentinel breaking open the wall/doors would be a nice look. Done in PSP X2 with a blend of textures and various overlay layers as well as some lighting effects (the eyes in particular). I almost submitted the image and then thought to add a couple of extra sets of eyes behind the main sentinel to indicate there are more behind him waiting to burst free from whatever prison that held them. Hope  you like.
